Music at the Ursuline College Blackrock

Choir

The choir has always been a big part of life at Ursuline College Blackrock. Students are encouraged to join the school choir to encourage singing together as part of a group. All year groups are invited to join the choir regardless of whether they take music as a subject. The choir performs at different events throughout the school year including the annual Carol Service, the annual school Open Night and various celebration masses.  They sing a wide variety of genres.

The choir is made up of students from 1st to 6th Year who sing in 3 part harmony. (SAA) Students who play instruments are also invited to accompany the choir to give them an opportunity to play as part of a group. This has proven to have been of great benefit to the students when being examined for practical examinations

Composers in the Classroom- TY module
The Composers in the Classroom scheme is an initiative which brings professional composers and musicians, quite literally, into the classroom as part of a special curriculum devised for transition year music students and their teachers. The scheme is devised by Cork International Choral Festival.
This year, the Transition Year students at Ursuline Secondary School were fortunate to be selected as one of the schools to participate in this module. The students are working with musician Irene Buckley. It has allowed them to develop their musicianship, thinking skills and creativity.

U Factor

The annual talent show ‘U- Factor’ plays a big role at Ursuline Secondary School. Each year, the 5th Year students are given the opportunity to organise and run a school talent show. It allows the 5th Year students to work as part of a team developing organisational skills, time management while allowing them to think creatively.

Students from all year groups are invited to enter the talent show and showcase their individual talents. This year, we had a wide range of activities from singing, to Irish music, to drama and comedy. The students start preparing months before to ensure the show runs smoothly. This year it was a huge success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all students and staff.

The event is an opportunity to raise funds for a charity chosen by the school each year.
