The Ursuline Secondary School has had a student council for almost thirty years. We were among the earliest group of schools to introduce a student council. Like the school and indeed, the country in which we live, this council has evolved over the years to become an essential part of our school. Here in the Ursuline Secondary School, we strive to give our students a voice and to listen to that voice. From input on school uniform to consultation regarding important school policies, the school council plays an important role in our school. In the past three years, we have expanded the council to include two prefects from each year group along with the core group of senior students from 6th Year.

This year the student council selection took place entirely online due to the Lockdown/COVID-19 pandemic. Students looking to be considered for the council applied to the school management on-line during the Easter break. Next the staff and students were consulted about the personal characteristics needed for members of the school council. Interviews with the prospective candidates were held on Zoom. During the interview process, candidates discussed their vision for the 2020/21 council. The new student council was chosen at the end of May. This new school council adapted quickly to the new circumstances we live in so the usual training day at the Ursuline Secondary School in Thurles was replaced with a specially designed, school council induction day at the end of August here in Blackrock.

The council meets in Mr Carroll’s room once a week at lunch time. Class prefects from from 1st Year to 5th Year are elected in September and attend council meetings periodically. If necessary the council can be called to meet to respond to the needs of the school.

Members are assigned to different year groups and the council will attend at least one Board of Management Meeting, where they are invited to give a report.

Currently, Mr Pat Carroll is the link teacher with the School Council.
